Vijayakumar Associates is a Chennai-based boutique law firm built around nearly four decades of practice at the Bar. We act for founders, boards, and corporates across three closely connected disciplines: External General Counsel engagements, M&A and transactions, and indirect-tax litigation.
The firm is founder-led. A small team of associates work directly under the supervision of the founding partner. We do not staff matters with juniors three layers deep — the lawyer who answers your call is the lawyer who knows your file.
The founding partner — Vijayakumar R.
The founder qualified at the Bar in 1988 and began private practice the following year, in indirect-tax litigation — Sales Tax and Central Excise then; VAT, Service Tax, and GST in the years since.
Corporate advisory came in 1998, when a Chennai export business asked the founder to step in as External General Counsel. He held that role for twenty-four years. Over that period the work expanded — contract drafting, vendor and customer negotiation, board-level counsel, due-diligence rooms, and eventually the legal architecture for the promoter's full exit.
Since 2022, the founder has been serving as Regional Legal Consultant to one of the world's largest conglomerates, handling taxation, contract negotiation, drafting, and full-spectrum compliance and litigation coordination.
How we work
Clients have, over the years, come to treat the founding partner as a de facto member of their board. They call before signing, before speaking, sometimes before deciding. The questions are rarely purely legal; the answer almost always benefits from someone who has read the contract, knows the business, and has been on the other side of similar conversations.
That is the practice we run: the counsel you keep close. Not a vendor. Not a roster.
Technology
A modern legal practice cannot be run on paper. The firm operates a ticketed online legal helpdesk for client requests, maintains virtual data rooms for due-diligence engagements, and trains associates on both. Where AI-assisted tools sharpen drafting and research, we use them — without surrendering judgement to them.
